Patitiri, from the road above Patitiri harbour
Fri 21st May: Missed the turning off the M60 onto the M56. Being Manchester, there was no roundabout at the next junction and I ended up cruising the suburbs. Eventually got back on the motorway, had to turn round again and finally made it to the airport. The usual boring flight, then landed in an olive grove on Skiathos. Taken to the harbour by bus and sat in a taverna. There was an obvious Yorkshire group who soon got acquainted. Madeline from Ripon, a young couple from Leeds continuously cracking jokes, and a middle aged couple from Barnsley who were also funny.

Had the reps briefing, then got the ferry to Alonissos. On arrival I was told to get on a bus with a large group from another tour company. It took 25 minutes to reach my accommodation, which was annoying as I knew it was a five minute walk. Had chicken souflaki for dinner. The bill was €2.90.

Sat 22nd: Walked round the harbour until I found a taverna that did breakfast. The waiter said that I was the first customer of 2004, as they had just opened for the season.

Patitiri harbour
Walked to Cape Marpounda, then found the track leading to Vithisma and Megalos Mourtias beaches. Missed Vithisma and ended up at Megalos Mourtias. There were two tavernas, both closed and the beach was stony and rather scruffy. The water was cool and very clear. Swam and sunbathed for a couple of hours, then walked up to the Old Town (Hora) and had an excellent cheese omelette. Walked down towards Vrisitsa, but ended up at the neighbouring inlet of Gialia. The only people there left as I arrived and I had the beach to myself all afternoon. Snorkelled into a cave, sunbathed until about 5pm, then walked back to Patitiri. Photographed wild flowers at the roadside on the way. Lamb for dinner at the Anais restaurant.

Sun 23rd: Failed to hire a mountain bike as the shop was closed. Decided to try to find Vithisma beach once again. Met Madeline on the track, then finally found the path down to the beach. The last bit was very steep as I expected. There was one German couple on the beach who had arrived by boat. I was about to walk past them to the end of the beach when they called me over and said there was a seal there. I didn't believe it at first, but he leant me his binoculars and sure enough, I could see a seal right at the end of the beach. It was dark in colour and just clear of the shadow of a rock, so not very conspicuous. I retreated down the beach again so as not to disturb the seal. Snorkelled and sunbathed all morning. Climbed back up to the track, then walked through Megalos Mourtias and up to Hora for lunch.
