Jacaranda trees, Harare Train to Bulawayo
Jacaranda trees line the streets of Harare Steam train to Bulawayo
Fri 7th October: Arrived at the new Heathrow Terminal 4 at about 6pm. Had fish and chips in the restaurant and checked in about 8pm. The flight was only 30 minutes late. Sat in the middle of the Malawi Olympic team, on their way home from Seoul. I was in between a marathon runner and an 800m runner.

Sat 8th: Arrived at Harare about 9:30am, was met by the Guerba staff and bundled into a very small, scruffy taxi with a few other people and a mass of luggage. We were taken to the Oasis Hotel. Had a wash and then walked into the town.

Bush camp near Maun Many of the streets are lined with blue flowered Jacaranda trees. Harare is fairly prosperous with wide streets and familiar shops like Woolworths and a Wimpy Bar. They even have red pillar boxes and drive on the left. Had lunch at the Wimpy Bar then walked back to the hotel and sat by the pool. A band was playing very loudly. In the evening we had a briefing from our leader Jerry, then went to a restaurant for dinner. Afterwards we walked to the station and caught the sleeper train, first class, to Bulawayo. The carriages were like the British trains of the 1950's.

Sun 9th: Woke at dawn to the first sight of real African countryside. Arrived at Bulawayo about 9:30. Taken by taxi to a hotel for breakfast, then walked through a magnificent park to the Natural History Museum. The museum was excellent, with an interesting historical section on the first floor. Walked through the town back to the station, for the train to Francistown. The train was exceedingly slow and we stopped for at least an hour at the border town of Plumtree. There was a great row over one of the girls photographing the children on the platform. A policeman boarded the train and made a great fuss for about half an hour.

Gemsbok We got no lunch as the bar closed during the border crossing, but managed to get some tea later in the afternoon. Arrived after dark and boarded the truck to be taken to the Motel Marang in Francistown. The tents were already pitched, so we only had to wash and have dinner in the hotel.

Mon 10th: Got up early, had breakfast in the hotel, then set off for Maun. The road was rather monotonous, but with some birds to be seen, including ostriches. Camped in the bush, about half way to Maun.
