| Flight over the Okavango Delta |
Hippo threatens photographer in tiny canoe! |
| Sun 16th: Photographed a Herero woman in the camp for breakfast. We drove back to Maun and camped at Island Safari Lodge again. Did the washing and wrote some postcards. In the afternoon we went to Maun airport and took a one hour flight over the Okavango Delta in an Islander aircraft. Saw giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, warthogs and various antelope. Had an excellent dinner of chicken and chips at the lodge.
Mon 17th: Packed up quite early and had some free time before setting off mid-morning, in speedboats, up the Okavango to Chief's Island. |

There were lots of birds on island banks, and some in the reeds. We saw lots of blacksmith plovers, egrets, jacanas, malachite and pied kingfishers, fish eagles and various ducks. Arrived for lunch at our base camp just south of Chief's Island. Set up camp and in the late afternoon went up river in a canoe to see some hippos. The boatman stopped about 100ft away and wouldn't go any closer! Returned to base and had a swim. It rained a little in the night and we had to get up and put flysheets on the tents. |

| Tue 18th: Did the washing up, then set off in a canoe with our guide Kenneth, to an island further south. Had a long walk in great heat. Saw impalas, warthogs, lechwe, a fish eagle, hornbills, and a marabou stork, flying at first and then landing in a tree. Returned to base for a swim and lunch. Walked alone in the woods in the afternoon, which was nice but I didn't see much wildlife. Went off in the canoe with Kenneth in the evening, around the island.
Wed 19th: It rained heavily in the night. Got up at 6 to go off with Kenneth to Chief's Island. |

Lion encounter on a walking safari - scary! |
 |
Had a very pleasant two hour canoe ride, photographing fish eagles. Saw an otter and had a small green frog in the boat. Had a long walk on the island, often wading though thigh deep water. Saw a large tortoise, then some buffalo and impala. Briefly saw baboons in the woods. Finally, while we were looking at a bird, a lion walked into view, soon followed by a second one. They were about 50 yards away and could run faster than us! I took a few photos before they wandered off into the woods, obviously not hungry. |
