The herd of buffalo reappeared, agitated by the presence of lions, and then retreated again into the bush. Had lunch by the canoes, then returned to our camp. Had a swim, then I walked in the woods and tried to photograph the grey lories.

Thu 20th: Had a good canoe trip photo-graphing jacanas and saw some hippos again. Had a swim, then after lunch we packed up and took the speedboats back to Island Safaris. Photographed various birds on the return trip, and monkeys in the camp. Had dinner in the hotel and then watched a film about the Savuti river.

Elephants in Chobe National Park

Elephant, Chobe National Park Fri 21st: Had a long drive to Savuti Lodge, passing through part of Chobe reserve. Photographed some elephants from a distance, then found a dead antelope surrounded by vultures. Jackals chased the vultures off, to get their share of the kill. Camped by the dried up river bed of the Savuti.

Sat 22nd: Drove to Serondella camp. Saw lots of elephants on the way. Arrived about mid afternoon and walked along the river bank to watch the elephants drinking.

Also saw a small crocodile. Went for an evening game run and saw more elephants, including a mother with a very small baby, by the river. Also saw baboons and vervet monkeys, warthogs, various antelope and a huge owl in a tree. Returned to camp to find that a baboon had torn a hole in the mosquito netting of my tent. Photographed lightning in the evening.

Sun 23rd: Early morning game run, but saw very little. The elephants have vanished. Back at camp for breakfast I photographed the vervet monkeys and a bat in a nearby tree. Drove to Chobi Safari Lodge.

Owl in Chobe National Park Had lunch in the lodge, then went on a boat trip down the Chobe river. Saw a crocodile, a huge monitor lizard, lots of hippos, African skimmers and several fish eagles. Photographed the sunset over the river.

Mon 24th: Drove to the Zimbabwe border, crossed in about an hour, then went on to Victoria Falls. Had lunch at the Wimpy, then wandered round the shops. Walked by the falls in the afternoon and went to the tribal village museum. Dinner was at the Victoria Falls Hotel - six courses!
