Legodimo
On the northern bank of the Limpopo river, Botswana's side of the border with South Africa, is a place called Legodimo. Formerly a cattle farm, it is now managed as a nature reserve. It consists of 15000 hectares of mopane bush, interspersed with kopjes. I spent the month of September 2008 there as a conservation volunteer with Projects Abroad.

It may take a few days, but you soon realise that nothing happens here unless someone makes it happen. It's not a hotel. If you want water to come out of the taps, you have to start the pump. This brings the water up from underground and pumps it into a water tower. After a while, the tank overflows and someone runs to the pump to turn it off. If you want hot water, you light a fire under a steel drum - it's called a donkey boiler. To make the fire, you have to collect firewood. The swimming pool (originally a reservoir tank for a cattle trough) needs regular cleaning. Leaves get blown into it constantly and sometimes elephants come and drink from it, leaving a scum of elephant snot on the surface - nice!
