Brian |
| In the passageway between the kitchen and the washrooms, I first met Brian the porcupine. Although most newly arriving volunteers know of his existence, the size of him comes as a shock to everyone. Walking into a three foot diameter ball of quills in the dark is quite alarming. Fortunately, he doesn't like lights and will turn tail and wander off when a torch is shone on him. He comes to the kitchen each evening for a bowl of scraps and is surely the best fed porcupine in Botswana. |

| Not content with the kitchen scraps, Brian regularly raids the kitchen cupboards during the night. The main food cupboard is secured with rope each evening, if someone remembers to do it. If it's not tied up securely, Brian will break in and remove a bag of flour, maize meal or perhaps the sugar, most of which will be spread across the kitchen floor. If he can't get into the main food cupboard, he'll have a go at the cupboard containing the tea and coffee. He can chew through a lot of tea bags before deciding they're not very nice to eat. I was usually the first up in the morning, so got the job of cleaning up after him. |
