At the seep line there was a spotted hyena. It ran off a little way at first, then got bolder and returned to get a drink. The sun was still very low, so it was in shadow most of the time - not good for photography. Spotted hyenas were once thought to be hermaphrodite because the female has an extended clitoris that resembles a penis. Females are bigger than males and dominant in hyena society, so males are normally afraid of them. A male approaching a female is likely to get bitten. The female 'penis' is used to let the males know when a female is ready to mate. Our animal appeared to be a male, but who knows when it comes to hyenas.

Hyenas are said to eat the faces of people sleeping out in the bush.
