The Badger sett
Sun 19th: Up at 04:30 again and walked with Amos up to the cave opposite the church, where the other group observed. I tracked two male goats for about two hours. We went back there in the evening, but saw very little. It was hard on the eyes to keep watching in the failing light.

Mon 20th: Back again to the cave at 05:30, with Diana and Jessica. It was cold and windy and there was not much goat activity, though I did have five in view at one time. Photographed goats around camp in the afternoon. In the evening I went to look for

badgers with Tom, Amos, Melissa and Sylvia. We only saw their sett and had a difficult climb back down into camp. Slept in the open, so as to get a quick start in the morning.

Tue 21st: Up at 04:45 and left at 05:30 to walk down to Agia Roumeli. It was a hard trek with a full pack again. Arrived about 08:10 and took the 09:00 ferry to Chora Sfakion. It was good to see the coastline I had walked along years before. Got the bus back to Chania, checked in to the Omalos Hotel and had souflaki for lunch. In the afternoon I went with Elise and Sylvia to the town beach for a swim. Had dinner in a

restaurant in a ruined building. Drank too much raki.

Wed 22nd: It was too rough at sea for us to depart for Theodoro island in the morning, so spent the day waiting and walked around Chania. Finally set off at 5:30pm. Took taxis along the coast, then a boat over to the island and made camp around the church.

Thu 23rd: We had a walk around the island, then swam and sunbathed in the bay where we had landed. The boatman arrived with an excellent lunch for us. Swam again in the

afternoon, then climbed to the top of the hill to watch the sunset. Wine and nuts had been brought and we discussed goat conservation.

Fri 24th: Had a swim in the morning, before the boat came to take us back to Crete. Taxis took us to Chania. Later we visited the archaeological museum and maritime museum.

Sat 25th: Flew to Athens, where we had time to visit the Acropolis before I returned to Heathrow.
