View fom Mt Goda, towards Tadjoura.
Afar man in the woods. Foret du Day.
In the evening we took the dinghy a mile up the coast to Tadjoura town and had a good dinner in a rooftop restaurant. Kids were setting off firecrackers to celebrate Ramadan. On the return journey, several fish jumped into the boat, hitting one of the girls - lots of screams but no harm done!

Mon 8th: Took the dinghy into Tadjoura and had a walk around the town. It is teeming with goats. Saw the meat market, with joints covered in flies being cut up with cleavers. Spent a long time at a craft centre, saw the war cemetery and several ruined mosques, all riddled with bullet holes. Returned to the harbour, boarded a Nissan Patrol and set off for the Foret du Day. Passed several Afar settlements, some with camels wandering around, and saw a troop of gelada baboons on a hillside.

A Tukul - the Afar family home.

An Afar settlement.
Had lunch in a 'tukul' on the edge of the forest. We had very sweet tea, a huge salad and young goat. Walked into the forest, most of which appears to be dying. Some of the trees have been killed by strangler figs that have destroyed their hosts. Went to a viewpoint where there was a superb view over the Bay of Goubet. Returned to the village for a Coke, then set off back along the rough dirt-track road. Stopped at an Afar settlement and looked in a family tukul, with a sleeping or sitting area, cooking area, TV and fridge.

Inside is a sitting/sleeping area, cooking area, fridge and TV (yes, really!).
The kitchen.
Beware of camels on the road. Three layers of lava floes, in the Devil's Cauldron.
