Tomb of Emperor Haile Selassie, Trinity Cathedral, Addis Ababa

'Lucy', a tiny human who lived three million years ago. National Museum, Addis Ababa
Mon 9th Oct 2006: Arrived at Addis Ababa on the overnight flight, getting in around 8:30. Met James, the Explore leader, and changed money at the airport bank. Transferred to the Ghion Hotel, where I'd stayed before. Bought and wrote the postcards, then had a briefing from James. Did the city tour in the afternoon, visiting the church containing Haile Selassie's tomb, the National Museum and the viewpoint. We would have seen a different museum, but the president of Nigeria was visiting and had the place to himself. We had 'injera and wat' for dinner, in the hotel. Injera is a sort of pancake like grey carpet felt, with an underside like tripe.

The wat is a meat based filling that came in many varieties, with varying levels of spicing.

Tue 10th: Had porridge for breakfast then we boarded four Toyota Landcruisers and set off through Addis. As we left town, the motor traffic decreased and was replaced by ponies and traps, herds of laden donkeys, cattle, sheep and goats. Stopped for drinks at the 'Dreamland Family Resort' overlooking Lake Koka. Travelled on to Lake Ziway where we stopped to see the birdlife and cattle being brought down to drink. There were pelicans on an island, ibis, egrets and marabou storks.
