Tue 17th: Had a better night, though chanting continued from the Hamer village. We drove into even more barren scrub desert, saw a Gerenuk near the road and stopped after about an hour for passport checks. We were entering no-mans land between Ethiopia and Kenya. Went to a Dassanech village and had a look around before taking some photos of the tribesmen, women with babies and small children. Met a particularly tall boy called Yamora who accompanied me back to the cars. Under the shade of a tree were his father and a crowd of his younger brothers and sisters.

Drove back to Kuraz Wereda where we had drinks in a circular bar. We then went on to another village where Bruce Parry had stayed. As we entered the village, someone shouted 'Bruce' from one of the huts! We met Abanesh, the woman Bruce had stayed with. She invited us into her house and introduced her children and grandchildren. We then drove to Lake Turkana and had a long walk across the mud-flats to the shore, in great heat. James hoped to see where the Omo River joined the lake, but we could see no sign of it. Had lunch near the lake before driving back to Turmi. Showered, went to the bar and had dinner. After dinner a man was brought in who had been stung by a scorpion. I gave him my co-codamol tablets.
