Elder of the Proud tribe with Karo tribesman

Omo River crossing point
Sun 15th: Drove through desert scrub for an hour to a crossing point and took a small boat across the Omo River into Nyangaton territory. Walked for about 20 minutes to a village, had a look around and took some photos. Some of the children had complete football kit, some just had the shirt and some wore nothing at all. We asked why there were so few people in the village and were told that, as it was Sunday morning, most of the people were in church. Another 20 minute walk took us to the community church, where the service was still in progress. We filed in to the back pews and a small boy came and sat next to me.

Don't mess with the headman
He looked up at me and beamed a huge smile, then grabbed my knee with one tiny hand. James addressed the congregation, saying how pleased we were to be there and thanking the people for their hospitality. We walked back to the river accompanied by several children. Cokes and beers were brought from the village and we drank them under a tree on the river bank. Crossed the river back to the vehicles. As we were leaving, one of the drivers ran over a goat and there was the inevitable row about its value. Eventually a figure was agreed, the gates of the compound were opened and we were allowed to leave. It all looked like a set-up to me. Returned to camp for lunch. The boy with the abscess came round and shook hands with us all to thank us for the limited medical treatment we had been able to provide.
It was good to see him smiling again. We had a whip-round for the dead goat, so the driver would not lose most of his wages from the incident. Drove on to the tented camp at Turmi, where we spend three nights. There is a water shortage here, which will give us problems, but I did manage to get a shower. In the evening we walked up to a bar in town for beers. There were a few beautiful Hamer girls hanging around. Heard horns from the nearby Hamer village during the night.
