Presidential Palace, Quito
View of Quito
Tue 24th May: Got a taxi at 5am from the Holiday Inn to Heathrow Terminal 2. Checked in and got some breakfast before boarding the flight to Madrid. Got a window seat with yards of leg room. Met Nick, who had the aisle seat. Changed planes at Madrid for the 11 hour flight to Quito. Got an aisle seat with loads of legroom. Across the aisle was Liam, a dentist from Pocklington. At Quito airport I met Mike, who was to be my room-mate and Paul, the local guide, who took the four of us to the Hotel Quito. Had dinner in a restaurant across the road.

Wed 25th: Had a good breakfast in the top floor restaurant with a superb view out over the city, then met Paul for a guided tour. We walked to a viewpoint near the hotel. There were souvenir salesmen selling mainly fabrics, but one of them had cannabis scent sticks.

Guard at the Presidential Palace

Metropolitan Cathedral, Quito
Went by minibus to the old town and walked to the Presidential Palace. Watched the changing of the guard. There were hundreds of schoolchildren in the square as part of some celebration, doing aerobics. We went round several very ornate churches. Walked to another square where I bribed a shoe-shine boy for his photograph. It cost me a dollar. I was then pestered by another and eventually had to pay another dollar for his photograph. He offered to Blanco my trainers. After visiting another church, we had drinks in the square and the boys polished our guide's shoes.
Street-wise shoe-shine boy "Can I Blanco your trainers, sir?"
