Taking the marrows to market Ambeli Bay
When I turned out the bedroom light, a cicada began an incredible racket in the room (they can reach 120 decibels). I eventually found it behind the waste-paper basket and threw it out.

Sat 15th: Had a wander round the town after breakfast, then took the bus to Angali. Walked to Ayios Nikolaos beach and snorkelled and sunbathed for a couple of hours. Saw a huge sea slug, at least two feet long. Returned to Angali and walked the other way to Fira beach, which was not as good.

Snorkelling was OK and I saw a brown and yellow moray eel, about three feet long. There were also orange sea fans. Got the 5:45 bus back, showered, then walked up to the church of Kimisis Theotokou, to watch the sunset. Had dinner in a Greek and Danish run taverna, an excellent chicken risotto.

Sun 16th: Walked up to the church before breakfast to photograph the town in the morning light. Took the bus to Karavostasis then walked to Livadi and then to Katergo beach. It was windy but I found shelter amongst the rocks.

Snorkelled out to an island about 100yds from the shore. Sunbathed and swam until about 3:30 then walked back by the supposed coastal path, which was impossible to follow. Got the bus back to Hora and had a walk round the 'Kastro' old town. Had dinner in the same place as last night, giant baked beans followed by goat and potatoes.

Mon 17th: Took some photos in the Kastro then got the bus to Ano Meria. Walked down an old donkey path to Ambeli Bay which was a nice beach but small and too crowded, as half the bus passengers had the same idea.

Swam and then walked on round dirt track roads to Aghios Georgios Bay. This was a rather windswept fishermen's beach, but I swam and had some food before moving on again. Walked up old donkey paths back to Ano Meria, then down the west side again to Livadaki, which was a lovely beach in a sheltered bay. Snorkelled and sunbathed all afternoon, then walked along coastal trails and donkey paths to Angali, where I got the 6:30 bus back to Hora.

Tue 18th: Walked down donkey paths and rough footpaths to Fira beach near Angali.
