Queen's Palace, Antananarivo |
| Sun 13th Oct: Arrived at Antananarivo on the overnight flight from Heathrow, via Zurich. Passed a customs man in a wooden box with a port hole in the side. They had no currency declaration forms, so had to write out my own in full, on brown paper. Collected baggage, with some hassle from a porter, then changed money and boarded the truck.
Taken to the Solimotel. Checked in, then had a walk round the lake, with Tony. Took the first photos and started the video. Had a pizza for lunch, at the hotel. In the afternoon we had a tour of the town, in the truck, stopping at several view points on the way up to the Queen's Palace. Walked round the palace, which was a museum of royal artefacts. Photographed some huge spiders in the grounds. Returned to the hotel and had an excellent dinner of chicken and chips. |

Mon 14th: Some delay while the truck was repaired, then we set off for Perinet. Stopped for lunch at a Chinese restaurant with Christmas decorations up. Arrived at Perinet and checked in to a wooden chalet. Walked in the forest in the afternoon and saw brown lemurs. After dinner of Malagasy food, went for a night lemur search. Saw lots of shining eyes in the trees, brown, dwarf and mouse lemurs. Got a good view of a mouse lemur. Also saw tiny chameleons, stick insects, preying mantis and tree frogs. |
| Tue 15th: Had a morning lemur trek, in the rain. Good sightings of indri, brown lemurs and a glimpse of what was supposed to be a bamboo lemur. Lots of interesting plants, birds nest ferns etc. Also a lily pond. At the end, children near the old fish farm produced a large green chameleon, which posed for photographs. Heard the indris singing several times. Returned to the hotel for coffee then set off on the return journey to Tana. Enjoyed it much more than the outward journey, as I was feeling better. Filmed workers in the paddy fields, shops and burning of the forest. |

Back in Tana, had a walk through the market and bought tapes, postcards and a valiha - a musical instrument consisting of a stringed bamboo pipe. The tapes were 4000FMG each and the valiha 5000FMG. (3200 to the £). Dinner at the Hotel de France was excellent. Stayed at the Central Hotel - noisy in the night.
Wed 16th: Supposed to leave for Ansirabe, but the truck is broken down. Spent the morning walking round the market and up the hill to a church with an excellent view of the whole town. |
