Sun 20th: Had banana pancakes for breakfast, then drove to Ihosy for drinks. We were driving over high open plains, covered in termite mounds. Stopped for lunch in a very windy place on the open plains. Drove on to Ranohira for another drink, then came to the camp site on the edge of the Isalo National Park. Washed in the nearby stream. Was very sick in the evening and missed out on Darren's chocolate cake baked on the open fire.

Mon 21st: Ashley cooked porridge for breakfast, which was excellent. We trekked into the Isalo National Park and walked for a

couple of hours through spectacular rock scenery. It was very hot. Stopped for lunch at a beautiful pool with waterfall, surrounded by palm and aloe trees. There is papyrus growing here and many strange plants, probably unique to the area. Swam in the pool. Walked with the guide to a viewpoint and saw tombs in the rocks. The guide was barefoot and carried a water bottle on her head. We also had a porter who carried a jerry can of water.
Tue 22nd: Packed up and set off on the road to Tulear. Drove over open plains, scattered with palm trees. Stopped for lunch in a eucalyptus forest. In the afternoon we stopped to look at some Mahafaly tombs. They are huge and decorated with scenes from the occupants life and cause of death. Good hotel at Tulear, with hot showers. Very welcome after three night's camping. Had dinner at a restaurant down the road. Chicken and chips again.

Wed 23rd: Got up at 5am to take the boat to Anakao. Outrigger canoes with outboard motors, loaded with locals as well as us tourists. There were eight adults and a baby on my boat. Arrived about 9am for breakfast by the beach. Stayed in a beach bungalow, surrounded by exotic plants.

Snorkelled with Tony off the beach. There were damsel fish, butterfly fish, starfish, a sea snake and a sting ray. Had an excellent lunch of salad followed by sting ray, followed by fruit salad. Walked along the beach afterwards and filmed the fishermen. Saw the ring-tailed lemurs behind the kitchens and took some excellent film of them. While I was filming, a dog peed on my daypack. In the evening, the lemurs were leaping around the restaurant. After dinner, of fish and chocolate mousse, I walked along the beach.
