Arrived at Berenty about mid-day and had a shower before lunch. In the afternoon we walked through the forest looking at lots of lemurs, brown, sifaka, ring-tailed and a nocturnal lepilemur in a hole in a tree. After dinner we had a night walk in search of lemurs. Saw mouse lemurs and a large chameleon.

Wed 30th: Woken at 5am by lemurs on the tin roof of our bungalow. Walked through the forest in the morning and saw lots of ring-tails and sifakas, plus brown lemurs and flying foxes (bats). Returned to the bar for a drink, then filmed sifakas dancing across the road.

After lunch I walked in the forest, alone for the whole afternoon. I filmed brown lemurs feeding, ring-tails scent marking and sifakas jumping. A ring-tail licked my knee and tried to chew on it. Took lots of film. Evening trek through the spiny forest looking for nocturnal lemurs. Saw a lepilemur and a skops owl.

Thu 31st: Got up at 5:15 to walk through the forest. Saw the ring-tails sunbathing in a tree and sifakas dancing across open ground to a tree to feed from. Left at 8:30 for the drive to Fort Dauphin.

Stopped at a huge market, including a cattle market, and also stopped to look at pitcher plants. Good lunch at Fort Dauphin, but very slow service. Walked along the coast road and around the town in the afternoon, but there was little of any interest.

Fri 1st Nov: Walked to the market in the morning and returned via the coast road. In the afternoon we took boats to the Portuguese fort. The whole village turned out to greet us. On the way back, going into the wind, we got soaked to the skin. Then had a cold and rough truck ride back to the Hotel Dauphin. In the evening we went to a Malagasy 'Hotely' for dinner. I had fish and rum punch. It was very good.

Sat 2nd: After breakfast I bought some cards from the hotel shop and stamps from the money changer. Walked to the beach and had a short swim before going to the bar for a drink. In the afternoon we went to the botanical gardens. They were a bit run down, like everything else here, but there were a lot of interesting plants and some hook-billed vanga chicks. Went to the beach restaurant for dinner. The food was good but the service was incredibly slow, waiting over an hour for each course.
Sun 3rd: Spent the morning packing and sitting in the hotel garden. Went to the Malagasy restaurant for lunch and had a pizza. Then went to the airport for the flight back to Antananarivo. The flight was very rough, with great turbulence as we flew through a thunder-storm with almost continuous flashes of lightning. A large crab climbed out of someone's hand baggage and walked down the aisle.
