Sun rise over the Sossusvlei dunes...
Mon 16th: Left at 9am for Namib-Naukluft Park. Stopped to look at a sociable weavers nest in a camel thorn acacia tree. Further on, a rock monitor lizard crossed the road and we saw the nests of red-billed buffalo weavers on the telegraph poles. Stopped for lunch under a tree in an arid valley. Continued on to Sesriem. Had drinks and a shower. This is virtually desert now. I've been promised delivery of my rucksack (again) tonight. We've seen ostriches and gemsbok, springbok and more baboons. No sign of the rucksack.
Tue 17th: Got up before dawn and drove to the Sossusvlei dunes. Followed a line of people up 'Dune 45' and saw the sunrise from the top. The desert scenery was incredible and I took a whole film. Had breakfast at the foot of the dune, then drove on, with a couple of photo-stops to Hidden Vlei, a salt pan about 2km walk amongst the dunes. Saw lizards and a variety of beetles on the way. There were springbok in the salt pan. On the way back we passed a group of ostriches with young of different sizes. On returning to camp we learned that my rucksack had been delivered at 7am - incredible. Had a shower and change of clothes before lunch. After a siesta, we went to Sesriem canyon and walked through a very narrow fissure in the ground, cut by flood waters. Saw springbok on the way back.
