Fri 18th Feb: Took the mid-day bus into York, a packed train to Kings Cross and the tube to Heathrow. Check-in with Gulf Air was very efficient and the flight left on time.

Sat 19th: Had three hours in Bahrain before the flight to Muscat. The hundred seater plane seemed very small and was only half full. I arrived at noon and was met by the Golden Tulip Hotel shuttle bus driver, holding a card with my name on it. I was in the hotel by 12:30 and had a buffet lunch. Had a wander around the hotel and found the pool, unexpectedly on the first floor. I then went out for a walk down the road, running parallel to the new motorway. This must have been the old road, but it's still a building site. Had a good steak dinner in the hotel.

Sun 20th: Met Richard in the foyer and we nearly missed the shuttle bus back to the airport, as it set off without us. We met the rest of the group at the Costa coffee shop, as arranged, and boarded the flight to Salala.

There we met Paul, Marcelo and Khalid who gave us drinks and sandwiches before driving us to our base camp in the mountains. Paul showed us around camp, demonstrating the use of the shower bags and the trench system of the lavatories. I found a tent and unpacked. Paul gave us a 'health and safety' talk and Marcelo gave a talk about the conservation strategy. Information about the presence of leopards is hard to come by, as the locals are reluctant to admit illegally killing a leopard. It is not known if livestock predation really is reducing leopard numbers or if other factors are to blame. At dinner, each member of the group introduced themselves. I'm amazed at how many others have lived or worked in Oman in the past. I slept badly, as I'd expect for the first night.

Mon 21st: After breakfast, we went to the Bedu tent and Marcelo described the different mammal tracks we may see, pointing out the variations between species. He then showed us how to use the GPS units. After lunch, we
