The versatile Guerba truck
GUERBA - Grubby Uncomfortable Expeditions Round Bumpy Africa
Mon 11th: Arrived In Nairobi at 08:30 and was taken by bus to the Boulevard Hotel. Sat out on a terrace drinking water and watching bird life, then got some lunch before leaving about 1:30. Drove to the border, with a short stop at a souvenir market. Got the passport stamped for leaving Kenya, then drove 100yds to Tanzania for another passport stamp and luggage check. Continued on to Arusha. The land is very dry and dusty. We passed Masai herdsmen with their goats and cattle. Finally got to Arusha after dark and reached the campsite about 7:30. It was a relief to find the tents already up. Had a good dinner of chicken and rice.

Tue 12th: Got up at 6 and packed up the tent before breakfast, with help from Wayne, a friendly Australian. Drove into Arusha and went to the bank to change money.

Breakfast in Arusha
It was the same bank I was in 17 years ago and still as slow. It took an hour and a half to change a $50 note. Bought drinks for the nights in the Serengeti. Went on to Mto Wa Mbu where we stopped for lunch in a campsite. Drove up onto the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley and stopped at a viewpoint looking over Lake Manyara. Could see giraffes down by the waterside. Drove on to Karatu and pitched tents in another campsite. A Spanish group partied until 2:30am.
