Creche of young ostriches Black rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater
On the return journey we saw several groups of elephants, some sleeping lions with cubs hiding in the reeds, as well as warthogs, topi, hartebeest, impala Thompson's gazelle and lots of guinea fowl. Also photographed waterbuck. Benedict had baked a cake for our dinner. "Night-night and don't let the lions bite". Heard a hyena, jackal, zebra and lion during the night.

Fri 15th: Set off at 6:15 and first saw a cheetah with two well grown cubs, incredibly well camouflaged in the dry grass. They set off in the direction of a group of Thompson's gazelles but did not seem interested in hunting. We passed a line of zebras that looked superb in the early morning sunshine. Then saw three lions that were initially a long way apart. We watched them meet up and greet each other.

Giraffes on the lookout
We came to a large troupe of baboons with lots of young ones. One of the adults had a reedbuck which it was tearing to pieces and eating. Then we saw three male lions lying under a tree, before we set off across the dry grass plain back to the park entrance. After lunch we continued across the plain out of the Serengeti. For an hour there is nothing to see but miles and miles of dry grass. We collected firewood at the base of Ngorongoro crater, then visited a Masai village where we were shown round a cow dung hut and bought souvenirs. Photographed the children. Set up camp on the rim of the crater, then had a cold shower in a very primitive wash house. Slept well.
