Mon 27th: Drove back into Goma and walked round the town. Had a shower at the hotel swimming pool and got a shirt and jeans washed by the hotel laundry. Lut has fractured the base of her spine and is to be evacuated. The arrangements take all day, so we have a day to relax in Goma. I bought a malachite rhino at the hotel souvenir shop. Returned to the gravel pit camp site for dinner.

Tue 28th: Packed up and went into Goma to see Lut at the hospital. Liz is accompanying her back to Belgium, so we lose our cook. Phil and Ray stay behind to see them off and help with

arrangements. We later drove round Lake Kivu which is very like the English Lake District, but with banana plantations. Stopped for lunch in a pleasant shaded glade. Arrived at Kahuzi-Biega at about 7pm. Set up camp in the dark.

Wed 29th: Got up at six to go gorilla trekking. Walked up to the park H.Q. where we had to select 8 from the 11 people there to go on the trek. I lost out and was very disappointed, but when we got back to camp, Karen had left her bag behind, so I took her place on the trek. After a hard climb up the hillside we stopped at the place where the gorillas had been seen the previous day. We found a small chameleon. We then went on through the forest and found gorilla dung and nests used the previous night. Twice we heard gorilla alarm calls and some chest beating, but never saw the gorillas. Gave up about 3:30 and returned to camp - six hours hunting without success.

Thu 30th: Got up at six and walked to the park headquarters for another attempt to find gorillas. This time we were heading for a different group. After ten minutes walk we were led down a track into the forest and within five minutes we came face to face with an enormous silverback gorilla. He walked around a bit and then sat down, leaning against a tree trunk. The trackers cleared the foliage obstructing our view of him and after a few minutes he sat up and looked at us. It was too dark in the forest to photograph him without flash, but the guide said it was OK to use flash and the gorilla did not react at all as

the cameras flashed at him. After a few more minutes he lay down on his chest, facing us, and a baby left its mother in the bushes behind and came over to the silverback. The baby climbed over the male's back and swung from a vine overhead. It then did some chestbeating and lay down on its father's back. After half an hour we had to leave them and returned to the park headquarters. We saw a caged chimpanzee there and I bought a T shirt. Later, Stephen and I, led by a small boy, walked down to the village near the campsite and back through a large tea plantation. In the afternoon I washed clothes and then went
