with Alan and Francoise to look round the tea factory. I was given some tea. In the evening Frank cooked pineapple crepes, setting up a production line. I rolled crepes for over two hours.

Fri 31st: Packed up and had to push start the truck, as we left the lights on for too long last night. Stopped in the village near Kahuzi-Biega to fill the jerry cans with water. Drove on to Bukavu, where I bought a cassette of Zaire music and some chocolate, to use up my remaining currency. We stopped again for lunch in woodland just outside Bukavu. In the

afternoon we drove through mountains with spectacular views down to the Ruzizi river. Camped in cattle pasture near the river, a few miles past Kamanyola.

Sat 1st August: Drove to the Burundi border, accompanied by four soldiers who had 'hitched' a lift for most of the way. Arrived in Bujumbura around noon and changed money at a hotel. Helped with food shopping in the market. We camped in the car park at the Hotel du Lac Tanganyika on the shore of the lake. Helped with cooking a vegetable stew and bananas with custard. We had to keep a guard on the the camp throughout the night. Fortunately I got the 6-7am shift with the lovely Cherise.

Sun 2nd: At breakfast, a long tailed monkey was climbing over the truck and tried to get food from the table. Spent the morning around

the pool, swimming and sunbathing. Then we went to the Ruzizi National Park where we had lunch by the river. There were crocodiles on the mud banks and hippos in the deeper water. We also saw herons, egrets and Egyptian geese. Returned to the hotel and saw their captive crocodiles before doing guard duty on the truck. In the evening we went to a lakeside bar where there were hippos in the lake. They were supposed to emerge from the water at about 8pm, but we returned to the hotel before then for dinner at the truck. My night watch was from 2-3am, not so good.

Mon 3rd: Got up late and had a rush to get breakfast and pack up tents and mattresses. Went into Bujumbura and looked round souvenir shops. We then drove up into the mountains and had lunch at the roadside. Women in brightly coloured sarongs passed

with baskets on their heads, and a small herd of cattle with enormous horns. We then drove on to the Rwanda border. The truck was briefly searched on the Rwandan side. Continued through pine forests to camp near Butare.

Tue 4th: Drove to Butare where I changed money and looked round souvenir shops and the market. Drove on up the valley of the river Nyabisindu, through yam fields. At about 8pm we arrived at Kinigi, the base camp for the Parc National Des Volcans. There is no water here and we have no group booking for the gorillas. Phil has left the group to get visas for his next trip, so morale is low tonight.

Wed 5th: Went to the park H.Q. to see if there was any chance of getting on a gorilla trek. We were told to return at noon. Most of the group went off walking in the surrounding hills and
