Virunga Mountains Trekking into Virunga Mountains
only Peter and I stayed around until noon. To our surprise we were accepted for a visit to the 'Suza' group. We went back to camp and recruited Alan, Holm, Cherise and Charlotte to complete our group of six. Mark took us in the truck to Visoke and we walked for about two hours to huts on the edge of the forest. We bought water and charcoal for the night.

Thu 6th: Set off at 7am, hiking across fields for about two hours before entering the forest. Another hour and a half brought us to the place where the gorillas had been the previous day. We had walked for about five hours

before we finally reached the gorillas. At first we saw several adults moving across the hillside, then we moved in on an area where some young ones were rolling about in play. Took lots of photos, in good light. They moved away into a low 'tunnel' of vegetation through which we could see two youngsters playing together and swinging from the branches above. One of them came within a foot of the guide, about four feet from me. We could see a huge silverback male in the sunlight at the end of the 'tunnel' After about an hour we came away and walked back in about four and a half hours, making a total walking time of nine and
a half hours. I was totally exhausted and very thirsty as my water had run out soon after seeing the gorillas. Mark met us with the truck at the nearest point possible and we headed straight for the bar on our return to Kinigi.

Fri 7th: Had a late breakfast, with boiled eggs. Steven had managed to get on a gorilla trek, so we had a free morning, until he returned. I went to the park H.Q. and bought a good map of Rwanda. After lunch we set off for Kigali, driving through spectacular mountain scenery. Checked in to the Hotel Des Milles Collines. Changed some money with a black market

money changer. Had dinner at an 'Italian' restaurant. The first pizza they brought was inedible; the second was edible but dreadful.

Sat 8th: Had breakfast at the hotel's rooftop restaurant, then walked round the town and bought a booklet on gorillas at the ORTPN office (gorilla H.Q.). Had a buffet lunch at the hotel and sat by the swimming pool all afternoon. Flew back to London overnight, via Brussels.
